Google has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Eneco to buy electricity from a 63MW wind project in the Netherlands.
The US technology giant has signed a ten-year PPA for 100% of the output from Eneco's Delfzijl Noord wind farm to power its new data centre in Eemshaven, reports Wind Power Monthly.
The project is currently under construction and will feature turbines on a dyke near the coast. Nordex has been chosen to install its N100-3.3MW turbines on the development.
It is due to come online in 2015, in time to provide 100% of the power for the data centre, which is set to be opened early in 2016.
This is the third PPA Google has signed in Europe over the past 18 months. In January, it agreed to buy the power from four Swedish wind farms with a total capacity of 59MW and in 2013 it signed a ten-year agreement with developer OX2 for the power from the 72MW Maevaara wind farm in Finland.
To date, the Google has invested in 17 renewable energy developments, including eight wind projects. Much of this has gone towards powering data centres.
These projects accounted for 22% of the company's total energy consumption in 2012. Along with green power bought from the grid, 34% of Google's power came from renewable sources.
